March 19, 2011 was a day of epic proportions. I realize that the word "epic" is horribly overused (thanks a lot generation LOL-- or whatever it is we're calling you), but it is really the only way to describe what I did that day. I ran. I Julia Elizabeth ran ... and ran... and ran... and bloody just kept on running. I didn't run as if my life depended on it, mind you, if my life had depended on how fast I ran that day I would be dead, but that is not the point.
I RAN FOR 13.1 MILES.
If you had told me last year at this time that I would be running at all, let alone that I would be running a half marathon I would have smiled politely while I dialed your doctor to check if your meds were up to date. But I did do it and I'll do it again on June 11 and again in August. Yes, you should now being dialing my doctor to check my meds... I do believe this type of behavior is certifiable.
Here are some things I learned on that overly long run:
1) Just because you are running with a river "down" a canyon that does not mean that the run is downhill. Good grief no. Have you seen the Colorado River in Moab? It is slow and steady --much like my pace.
2) When running for an extended period of time any increase in incline looks like a BIG hill.
3) Head wind equals bad for time. Head wind equals bad for contacts.
4) I am not a high energy person.
5) I am not a competitive person.
6) "Fat Bottomed Girls" sung by the Glee cast is a surprisingly great song to run to.
These are all important life lessons.
Will I run the big 26.2? As of now? Hell to the no. But hey, check with me next year.
Later.
